BioSTL News Update – MediBeacon Announced as Winner St. Louis Regional Business Plan Competition

MediBeacon, a new St. Louis-based optical diagnostic company, has won the 2012 St. Louis Regional Business Plan Competition, beating out some of the most innovative small businesses in St. Louis. With the recognition, MediBeacon receives a $50,000 grant award and 90 hours of in-kind professional services to advance the first product from their portfolio – a groundbreaking platform that allows medical staff to monitor patient kidney function safely, more accurately, and in real time by utilizing a breakthrough fluorescent tracer agent combined with an optical sensor placed on a patient’s forehead or finger.

BioSTL’s affiliate, the BioGenerator, provided business assistance and funding to MediBeacon through the U.S. Department of Commerce funded i6 Challenge program that supports the launch of local bioscience startups. MediBeacon also utilizes the shared laboratory facilities of the BioGenerator Accelerator Labs. This marks the third year in a row that a BioGenerator portfolio company has won the award, following Pulse Therapeutics in 2011 and Mobius Therapeutics in 2010.

Additional winners in this year’s business plan competition include iLer Brands and Retectix, a bioscience company whose nanofabricated surgical mesh reduces the risk of patient complications from surgery. They will receive $30,000 and $20,000 grant awards, respectively.
